Vacation this year is a return visit to Kauai and the Big Island, and we arrived just ahead of Hurricane Lowell, who is passing a hundred miles to the west as this entry is being written. Winds are currently 50 mph with gusts up to 70 mph at the hotel, so nothing too extreme, but it has made for some heavy surf, and most of the island has shut down. We’re staying at the Hyatt because (among other reasons) I’m enamored with their waterslide and Audrey likes feeding koi, while the rest of the Holliday clan is a mile away at Ma & Pa’s timeshare. Scuba diving is booked two days from now on Wednesday and Thursday, but we’ll see if the forecast 15-25 foot waves have subsided sufficiently by then. So far the trip is off to a memorable and exciting start!
