Each year when the spring meltwaters come down from the Himalayas the river that drains the Tonle Sap lake reverses its flow and the lake increases in size by several times. Since the lakeshore is constantly moving, the local people have adapted by building houses that float, allowing them to continue living despite the constant fluctuations of the water.
