Elephant Carving

Location: Mahabalipuram, India
Date: October 2001
Camera: Pentax ZX-50
The area around Mahabalipuram has been known for stone carving for hundreds and hundreds of years. This carving is cut directly into a hillside and surrounds a temple that was quarried into the stone. To give a sense of scale, the elephant is life-sized. What amazed me most about this particular carving (besides the detail and skillful artwork) was that channels had been integrated into the stonework, providing a place for water to drain without eroding the stone.
