The Step Pyramid in Saqara pre-dates the pyramids in Giza and has the added benefit of not being as crowded. There are also a huge number of chambers and old buildings that are in various stages of excavation all around this pyramid. The only thing that I disliked about this part of Egypt was that rather than having random touts chasing after us, a few members of the local tourist police were the ones trying to get us to bribe them for "special" access or guided tours. I chose to avoid trouble by simply staying away from the police, while Skip's approach was to spend the afternoon masquerading as a Canadian Mountie. To each his own.
