Away from the Nile River Egypt is a desert like none I've ever seen -- there are no plants of any kind, no animals (except for flies, and there are a ton of flies), and definitely no sign of water. The Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens, and the other areas surrounding ancient Thebes were desolate canyons like this one, providing the perfect hiding places for the elaborate tombs that were built into the rock walls.
