Bayon

Bayon

Location: Angkor, Cambodia
Date: April 2001
Camera: Pentax ZX-50
The temples in Angkor seemed (to me) to generally fall into two categories: tall step pyramid-like structures, and maze-like structures that spread across a large area. The Bayon didn't really fall into either category -- it was several stories high and completely covered with these four-faced towers. No one is quite sure who the faces are supposed to represent, although there is speculation that it was a king of the time. Whoever the faces are supposed to be, they made the Bayon my favorite place to be at dawn -- there was just something magical about watching the light change as these smiling faces greeted the new day.
