For most of the year Savage River is as far as the Park Service will allow private vehicles to drive into Denali. It's also the beginning of the tundra in Denali, so I came here a lot to hike. My first hike upstream involved fording the river, and what I assumed was knee-deep water I accidentally discovered was slightly deeper and also extraordinarily cold.
