While reading through Wikipedia&#8217;s yearly summaries of important events the following stood out &#8211; part two will follow at some point when there is time to review the next eighteen years.<\/p>\n<p><u>The 1970s<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>November 10, 1975 &#8211; The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SS_Edmund_Fitzgerald\">Edmund Fitzgerald<\/a> sinks on Lake Superior.<\/li>\n<li>July 20, 1976 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Viking_1\">Viking 1<\/a> becomes the first American craft to land on Mars.<\/li>\n<li>May 25, 1977 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0076759\/\">Star Wars<\/a> opens in theaters.<\/li>\n<li>August 16, 1977 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elvis_Presley\">Elvis Presley<\/a> dies.<\/li>\n<li>September 7, 1979 \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\">ESPN<\/a> is launched.<\/li>\n<li>November 4, 1979 \u2013 The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iran_hostage_crisis\">Iran hostage crisis<\/a> begins.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>The 1980s<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>May 18, 1980 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikivoyage.org\/wiki\/Mount_St._Helens\">Mount St. Helens<\/a> erupts.<\/li>\n<li>April 12, 1981 &#8211; The first shuttle, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Space_Shuttle_Columbia\">Space Shuttle Columbia<\/a> launches on its first orbital flight.<\/li>\n<li>November 18, 1981 &#8211; IBM introduces the PC computer.<\/li>\n<li>October 1, 1982 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Epcot\">Epcot Center<\/a> opens in Orlando.<\/li>\n<li>November 30, 1982 &#8211; Michael Jackson&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thriller_(Michael_Jackson_album)\">Thriller<\/a> album is released.<\/li>\n<li>January 3, 1983 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/K%C4%ABlauea\">K\u012blauea volcano<\/a> begins erupting in Hawaii; the eruption continues today.<\/li>\n<li>October 26, 1984 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_Jordan\">Michael Jordan<\/a> plays his first NBA regular season game, scoring 16 points against Washington.<\/li>\n<li>March 1, 1985 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mikhail_Gorbachev\">Mikhail Gorbachev<\/a> becomes Secretary General of the Soviet Communist Party.<\/li>\n<li>May 16, 1985 &#8211; The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ozone_depletion\">ozone hole<\/a> is discovered by British scientists in Antarctica.<\/li>\n<li>November 18, 1985 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Calvin_and_Hobbes\">Calvin and Hobbes<\/a> debuts in 35 newspapers.<\/li>\n<li>March 14, 1986 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\">Microsoft<\/a> holds its initial public offering.  By July 2010 the stock had risen to 288 times its IPO price.<\/li>\n<li>April 26, 1986 &#8211; The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chernobyl_disaster\">Chernoybl nuclear reactor<\/a> explodes, resulting in the worst nuclear power plant disaster of the twentieth century.<\/li>\n<li>November 22, 1986 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mike_Tyson\">Mike Tyson<\/a> beats Trevor Berbick to become heavyweight champion.<\/li>\n<li>March 24, 1989 &#8211; The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Exxon_Valdez_oil_spill\">Exxon Valdez<\/a> runs aground in Alaska&#8217;s Prince William Sound, spilling 240,000 barrels of oil.<\/li>\n<li>June 4, 1989 &#8211; The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tiananmen_Square_protests_of_1989\">Tiananmen Square<\/a> square protests end with thousands of casualties as the Chinese military clears the square after six weeks of occupation by students.<\/li>\n<li>November 9, 1989 &#8211; Fall of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Berlin_Wall\">Berlin Wall<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>The 1990s<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>April 24, 1990 &#8211; The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hubble_Space_Telescope\">Hubble Space Telescope<\/a> is launched aboard Space Shuttle Discovery.  Shortly after launch the telescope&#8217;s mirror is determined to be flawed, and it will not be fixed until a servicing mission in 1993.<\/li>\n<li>November 13, 1990 &#8211; The first known web page is written.<\/li>\n<li>January 16, 1991 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Operation_Desert_Storm\">Operation Desert Storm<\/a> begins with air strikes and eventually involves over 500,000 US troops.<\/li>\n<li>December 4, 1991 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pan_American_World_Airways\">Pan American World Airways<\/a> ceases operations after 64 years.<\/li>\n<li>December 26, 1991 &#8211; The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soviet_Union\">Soviet Union<\/a> is formally dissolved by the Supreme Soviet.<\/li>\n<li>May 22, 1992 &#8211; Johnny Carson&#8217;s final appearance as host of the Tonight Show.<\/li>\n<li>October 31, 1992 \u2013 Pope John Paul II issues an apology, and lifts the edict of the Inquisition against Galileo Galilei.<\/li>\n<li>June 12, 1994 \u2013 Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Lyle Goldman are murdered outside the Simpson home in Los Angeles, California.<\/li>\n<li>March 1, 1995 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yahoo.com\">Yahoo<\/a> is founded.<\/li>\n<li>September 4, 1995 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.com\">eBay<\/a> is founded.<\/li>\n<li>December 31, 1995 \u2013 The final <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Calvin_and_Hobbes\">Calvin and Hobbes<\/a> comic strip is published.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The world has changed a lot since I was born &#8211; in November 1975 no American craft had visited Mars, Mount St Helens was still intact, communism was very much a thing, no one knew what it meant to &#8220;use the Force&#8221;, and Michael Jordan was a twelve year old.
