These  types of posts are fun reading in retrospect, and are also good when it&#8217;s nearly the end of the month and I haven&#8217;t met the <a href=\"\/journal\/2011\/01\/04\/if-you-have-money-dont-bet-on-any-of-these\/\">three entry goal<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Steve Jobs has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2011\/08\/24\/steve-jobs-resigns-as-apple-ceo\/\">resigned as CEO of Apple<\/a>.  While his supposed tendency to yell and micromanage would normally be negatives for a CEO, the guy had an unbelievable ability to discern trends and focus on what was both important and within his company&#8217;s area of strength, and it is sad to see him go.<\/li>\n<li>Mono Lake has <a href=\"http:\/\/monolake.org\/today\/water\">risen two and a half feet<\/a> this year, putting it seven feet from the restoration goal level, twelve feet above its all-time low, but still about thirty-five feet below its historic average.<\/li>\n<li>Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman made news by <a href=\"http:\/\/andrewsullivan.thedailybeast.com\/2011\/08\/huntsman-wakes-up.html\">stating that Republicans should embrace evolution and global warming<\/a>.  It&#8217;s more than a little scary that 150 years after Darwin a theory that underpins biology is still so controversial&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Four years late, the Boeing 787 finally <a href=\"http:\/\/seattletimes.nwsource.com\/html\/businesstechnology\/2016022340_boeing27.html\">gained its FAA certification<\/a>.  While the technology behind the plane is clearly a huge step forward, the delays unfortunately appear to have caused significant harm to Boeing&#8217;s ability to compete with Airbus and will take some time to recover from.<\/li>\n<li>Following a political crisis in which the US <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_debt-ceiling_crisis\">nearly defaulted on its debts<\/a>, the stock market has dropped about ten percent, but more notably has been regularly going up or down by three to five percent daily and giving those of us with a lot invested reason to sweat.<\/li>\n<li>SpaceX has been granted permission to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/2011\/08\/iss-managers-spacex-test-safety-reviews-ahead-debut-arrival\/\">combine its remaining two test flights<\/a>, and thus could be cleared to service the space station by the end of the year.<\/li>\n<li>The next <a href=\"http:\/\/www.london2012.com\/\">Olympic Games<\/a> are almost exactly eleven months away.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here are a handful of random current events that seem worth writing down.
