{"id":2020,"date":"2010-12-08T20:41:58","date_gmt":"2010-12-09T04:41:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mountaininterval.org\/journal\/?p=2020"},"modified":"2010-12-09T06:30:03","modified_gmt":"2010-12-09T14:30:03","slug":"poboys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mountaininterval.org\/journal\/2010\/12\/08\/poboys\/","title":{"rendered":"Po&#8217;boys"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After five nights spent in the back of the Subaru, tonight I&#8217;m clean and in a bed; angels sang out during my first shower in far too long.<\/p>\n<p>The day&#8217;s activities included visits to several national wildlife refuges along the Gulf Coast that were home to ridiculous numbers of birds.  I saw more hawks than I&#8217;ve ever seen before, and the never-ending flocks of geese and other birds that were arriving was awe-inspiring.  Sadly there were no photographs &#8211; I suspect that, for a bird, when people shoot at you during certain times of year then posing for pictures isn&#8217;t a courtesy you feel needs to be extended.<\/p>\n<p>Since I didn&#8217;t quite make it to New Orleans the plan is to head in that direction tomorrow.  While in Louisiana I&#8217;m making an effort to sample as much Cajun food as possible.  The verdict so far: <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boudin\">Boudin<\/a> (a sausage whose ingredients I dare not investigate) is tasty, shrimp <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Po%27_boy\">po&#8217;boys<\/a> are good but not extraordinary, and the seafood <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gumbo\">gumbo<\/a> was decent except for the strong taste of dirt; hopefully the food in New Orleans will redeem the state&#8217;s culinary reputation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After five nights spent in the back of the Subaru, tonight I&#8217;m clean and in a bed; angels sang out during my first shower in far too long.
