{"id":16089,"date":"2026-02-15T22:37:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T06:37:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mountaininterval.org\/journal\/?p=16089"},"modified":"2026-02-19T11:50:43","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T19:50:43","slug":"go-north-young-man","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mountaininterval.org\/journal\/2026\/02\/15\/go-north-young-man\/","title":{"rendered":"Go North Young Man"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We thought we were cursed to have another night of Auroras hidden behind clouds again last night, but the snow finally stopped, and around 11:30pm the skies started to clear and the lights were shining above us, giving us a good show until the clouds returned and we finally collapsed into bed at 1am. The &#8220;KPI index&#8221; hit a max of 4 (out of 9) during our eight nights in Alaska; it&#8217;s tough to imagine how amazing it must be during a huge solar storm when the number goes higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This morning we got up at 6:45 and carefully made our way through the falling snow and back to Fairbanks.  Audrey spotted a mother moose and her year-old calf next to the road as we were getting ready to drop our car, which made for a nice ending to an excellent trip.  It&#8217;s unlikely that we&#8217;ll do another Northern Lights trip any time soon &#8211; the typical cycle of solar activity lasts 11 years, and the current cycle peaked last year &#8211; but this trip was a great chance to see the lights near the cycle&#8217;s maximum, and we were lucky that the universe gave us a few nights that we&#8217;ll remember forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-main\" src=\"\/photos\/images\/2026-02-A\/4851-fairbanks-aurora-borealis.jpg\" alt=\"Aurora Borealis\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"caption\">The vivid colors and tall trees around the cabin made for a fun late-night Aurora photography session.<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-main\" src=\"\/photos\/images\/2026-02-A\/4836-fairbanks-aurora-borealis.jpg\" alt=\"Aurora Borealis\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"caption\">The Auroras alternated between a dim glow and a bright band of neon light snaking across the sky for a little over an hour last night.
