Early in the month we celebrated Audrey&#8217;s birthday with a weekend in Palos Verdes, and over Christmas I took a few extra days to roam around California on the round-trip to the Bay Area to see the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-main\" src=\"\/photos\/images\/2024-12-A\/4044-palos-verdes-coastline.jpg\" alt=\"Palos Verdes Seacliffs\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"caption\">Palos Verdes Seacliffs.  Like many places in the Los Angeles area, Palos Verdes isn&#8217;t far from us as the crow flies, but it&#8217;s a bit of a slog as the car drives, so we don&#8217;t visit often.<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-main\" src=\"\/photos\/images\/2024-12-A\/4082-henry-cowell-sp-banana-slug.jpg\" alt=\"Banana Slug, Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"caption\">How awesome are banana slugs?!?!?  There were about twenty of the big fellas sliming about, as well as a few nice trees, while roaming the Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park near Santa Cruz.<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-main\" src=\"\/photos\/images\/2024-12-A\/4102-merced-nwr-snow-geese.jpg\" alt=\"Snow Geese, Merced National Wildlife Refuge\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"caption\">During the winter the Merced National Wildlife Refuge is one of my absolute favorite places in the world for seeing thousands upon thousands of geese, cranes, hawks, and other birds.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While obviously not as exciting as the great 2024 sabbatical, there have been a few small adventures this month that merit a journal entry.
