{"id":10702,"date":"2017-02-20T19:04:04","date_gmt":"2017-02-21T03:04:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mountaininterval.org\/journal\/?p=10702"},"modified":"2017-02-24T18:41:42","modified_gmt":"2017-02-25T02:41:42","slug":"ryan-holliday-general-manager","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mountaininterval.org\/journal\/2017\/02\/20\/ryan-holliday-general-manager\/","title":{"rendered":"Ryan Holliday, General Manager"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m pretty sure that writing a post that combines statistical analysis and the Cleveland Browns is a surefire way to drive away any remaining readers of this journal, but math and the NFL&#8217;s worst team are two of my favorite subjects, so against better judgement I&#8217;m going to indulge myself.<\/p>\n<p>Browns fans apparently hate the idea of trading away the #1 pick in the upcoming draft, but here&#8217;s why I&#8217;d do it anyhow (see also <a href=\"\/journal\/2016\/04\/16\/moneyball\/\">Moneyball<\/a> and <a href=\"\/journal\/2016\/04\/30\/moneyball-2\/\">Moneyball 2<\/a> for my past ramblings on this subject).  The <a href=\"http:\/\/profootballtalk.nbcsports.com\/draft\/draft-trade-chart\/\">draft value chart<\/a> says the #1 pick is worth 3000 points, a number that is almost certainly more than it should be, which means that the Browns should be able to make a trade similar to any of the deals in the table below. Note that in recent years teams have given up <i>more<\/i> than 3000 points, so the first pick may even be overvalued beyond what is shown below.  The table shows the #1 pick from each of the last four drafts, and the players who were picked at positions equal to the value of that #1 pick. In the past four drafts, the results of making the hypothetical trade would have been:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color:green;font-weight:bold\">great<\/span>: 3 times<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:green\">good<\/span>: 5 times<\/li>\n<li>about even: 9 times<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:red\">poor<\/span>: 0 times<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:red;font-weight:bold\">terrible<\/span>: 3 times<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are exceptions &#8211; in 2012 everyone in the world agreed that it would be insane to pass on Andrew Luck &#8211; but this draft doesn&#8217;t have a can&#8217;t-miss quarterback, so if someone offered a deal I&#8217;d look at the numbers above and almost certainly make the trade, rather than risking everything on the hope that Myles Garrett won&#8217;t be the next Courtney Brown.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m pretty sure that writing a post that combines statistical analysis and the Cleveland Browns is a surefire way to drive away any remaining readers of this journal, but math and the NFL&#8217;s worst team are two of my favorite subjects, so against better judgement I&#8217;m going to indulge myself.
