{"id":10011,"date":"2016-07-31T19:10:37","date_gmt":"2016-08-01T02:10:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mountaininterval.org\/journal\/?p=10011"},"modified":"2016-07-31T19:10:37","modified_gmt":"2016-08-01T02:10:37","slug":"what-happens-in-july-stays-in-july","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mountaininterval.org\/journal\/2016\/07\/31\/what-happens-in-july-stays-in-july\/","title":{"rendered":"What happens in July stays in July"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>July 2016 hasn&#8217;t had a ton of excitement in it, so here&#8217;s a look back at this month in years past.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><a href=\"\/journal\/2015\/07\/\">July 2015<\/a><\/b> &#8211; This time last year the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/newhorizons\/main\/\">New Horizons spacecraft<\/a> was zooming by Pluto, sending back some mind-boggling photos of the farthest object humans have visited in our solar system.<\/li>\n<li><b><a href=\"\/journal\/2014\/07\/\">July 2014<\/a><\/b> &#8211; In 2014 I spent the first half of July <a href=\"\/journal\/tag\/turkey\/\">roaming around Turkey<\/a>, and by the end of the month was starting on <a href=\"\/journal\/tag\/tanzania\/\">a two week safari in Tanzania<\/a>.  2014 alone provided enough great July memories to ensure that I will never be able to complain about any slow years.<\/li>\n<li><b><a href=\"\/journal\/2008\/07\/\">July 2008<\/a><\/b> &#8211; I dragged the Skipper halfway around the world on a <a href=\"\/journal\/tag\/iceland\/\">trip to Iceland<\/a> to see puffins and glaciers and geysers.  How Iceland isn&#8217;t a more popular destination for nature travelers is a mystery &#8211; I&#8217;d go back in a second.<\/li>\n<li><b><a href=\"\/journal\/2002\/07\/\">July 2002<\/a><\/b> &#8211; The month this journal was born was the month that the <a href=\"\/journal\/tag\/alaska\/\">Great Alaskan adventure<\/a> kicked off.  It&#8217;s rare that you have an experience that you know will change your life, and I was insanely lucky to get to spend a full three months on a journey with full awareness that it would become a defining moment in life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/photos\/images\/2014-08-A\/3715-ndutu-african-elephants.jpg\" alt=\"African elephants at Ndutu\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" class=\"img-main\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"caption\">July 2014.
